Abstract

Nursing science in India holds a central role in the healthcare system, with nurses forming the largest and most widely distributed segment of the health workforce. They deliver essential care across hospitals, community settings, public health programs, and educational institutions. Over time, the profession has evolved from a service-oriented role to one that emphasizes scientific inquiry, evidence-based practice, and professional autonomy. However, progress remains uneven, with gaps in research capacity, academic development, and integration of evidence into clinical practice. India’s rapidly changing healthcare landscape – marked by epidemiological transitions, technological advancements, and increasing expectations for quality and safety – requires a stronger scientific foundation for nursing practice.
